Artist
Finding; found: both are important to my painting process. Found objects; found surfaces; found references. Finding my way; finding the right color or shape; sometimes literally taking a walk. Whether my work points to the natural world, pop culture, folk art, graphic design, late-Modern painting – all important touchstones for me – or another direction, it’s all rooted in my accumulation of material, and in the subsequent agglomeration of it all on my panels, canvases, and papers. Found…and then pushed and pulled in the image field, until the conversation feels resolved, the thrust and parry of a particularly invigorating relationship. And as a crowning touch to the emphasis on the curiosities of materiality and plasticity, a pleasant glaze of metaphor, nodding to my love of language. Not too much mystery; just enough: that’s the ideal.
